Your Pet Has Fleas: Now What?

Whether your furry friend tracked them in, or they hitched a ride on you, once fleas are in your home, they can be a pain to eliminate. Our tips will help ensure your home becomes, and stays, flea free!

Step One: Treat Your Pets

You don’t want your pet to be uncomfortable or continue to be a hub for fleas. Some treatment options are:

  • Flea medication.
  • Certain essential oils (use with caution- some are fine for certain animals but toxic to others).
  • Flea collars.
  • Food-grade diatomaceous earth.
  • Flea baths.

Whatever option you choose, it’s smart to discuss it with your vet. That way, they can note it but also give you insight. Some flea treatments, medicinal or natural, require more than one application over a period of time.

Tip: Before treatment, you can comb your pet with a flea comb. Dunk the comb into a bowl of hot water with dish soap. After each swipe, dry it, then repeat. Hot water with dish soap can kill fleas but isn’t a viable treatment option. Once done, pour the water down the sink and run hot water for a minute.

Step Two: Go Through Everything

You may think that everything is fine after your pets are treated- unfortunately, this is not the case. Fleas are pesky, and can not only live but reproduce for a long time. Even if you caught the fleas early, giving your home a thorough clean is not a bad idea. Including:

  • Washing all clothing, bedding, and anything machine washable with the hottest water and drying cycle it can handle.
  • Vacuum any flooring and upholstery, empty the contents into a bag outside, and promptly throw it out.
  • Mop with hot water.

Step Three: Repel and Prevent

When it comes to our pets and family, chemical bombs can cause respiratory issues and illness. Even all-natural alternatives like diatomaceous earth can agitate the longs and cause vacuums to break.

When you want a safe way to repel and prevent fleas, look no further than an Ever Pest eco-friendly Ultrasonic Pest Repeller.
